TURQUOISE

The name turquoise comes from the French turquoise meaning “Turkish”, as their trade route on their arrival in Europe crossed Turkey. Since ancient times, the most valued specimens, of an intense sky blue colour and clean, were the Persian turquoises (Nishapur), in mines of more than 3000 years ago. The mines in the Sinai Peninsula, in Egypt, were already exploited in 6000 BC, and for thousands of years they were used in the jewels of the ancient Egyptians.

Turquoise is usually crossed by veins of other minerals or adjacent rocks, in this case it is called matrix turquoise.

Special care has to be taken with heat, sunlight can deteriorate the colour, also sweat, oils and cosmetics. Turquoise rings should be removed when washing your hands.

PLANETS AND STARS

Turquoise is related to the month of December and Sagittarius. In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, it was believed that precious stones were an emanation from the stars. The cosmos would be reflected in the precious stones. Each planet is attributed a gemstone and also the constellations.
