SPINEL

For centuries they have been confused with rubies, as the two gems share many properties. Like rubies, spinels appear to fluoresce in natural light, although spinels tend to have a slightly more pinkish spot than rubies.

They can be found as pebbles in rivers and are also often associated with rubies and sapphires. The highest quality gems are found in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India and Russia.

Although the Ruby Spinel variety is better known for its red colour, there are more colours that are given characteristic names to differentiate them. The Ruby Bullet is the spinel that ranges from pink to pale red and comes from Afghanistan. The blue colour usually has shades from pale blue-grey to dark blue. The Spinel flames from orange to orange-red. The Picotita is brown in colour. The Pleonasto is dark green, dark blue and also opaque. The Rubicelle goes from yellow to orange. There are also specimens in mauve tones, called Almandina, and even in opaque black-gray called Ceylonite. There are also colourless spinel and white spinel.
